CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position. —Brian Tracy

History

As an Instructional Designer, I use my skills to translate pedagogical research and practice into an instructional curriculum to produce desired learning outcomes.  When creating a course, I apply both Backward Design Principles and the ADDIE model to identify the audience and performance outcomes, design and develop learning strategies and evaluate at all stages of course completion.

Working in Higher Education has allowed me to work with Subject Matter Experts designing courses using a broad range of technology and experience with two Learning Management Systems (Blackboard and Canvas). Creating courses includes identifying students' learning needs, developing objectives/outcomes, content alignment, implementing instructional content and teaching strategies, and conducting course evaluations. My experiences have included a wide variety of tasks, offering training for faculty and students, developing faculty and student guides, and evaluation courses, and developing online and hybrid courses.  Work with subject matter experts creating engaging learning experiences for the targeted audience.   Collaborating with team members on projects, incorporating Quality Matters Standards, and evaluating courses.

I have been working in education since 2007, teaching in the Middle School for nine years before transitioning in 2016 to Instructional Design and Coaching.  I earned my Undergraduate Degree from Texas A&M Commerce in 2007 in Interdisciplinary Studies, 4-8 Mathematics. In 2016, I completed my Graduate Degree in Curriculum & Instruction – Instructional Design and Technology. Both of my degrees have given me the joy of working in a profession that I have found rewarding. Before getting into the field of education, I had earned an Associate’s Degree in Drafting and Design, working in the engineering field and applying my skills using AutoCAD.

About Me

CAROL PECKINPAUGH

I grew up in a military family with my parents and one brother, living in both Germany and Texas during my childhood. Through my travels across Europe, I experienced a wide range of cultures and adventures. As an adult, I’ve spent most of my life in Texas, with a brief time in Colorado. I’m the proud parent of two grown children, and I enjoy spending my free time hiking, biking, camping, and staying active in my community. I also love attending live music venues and the theater. Maintaining my health is important to me, and one of my most rewarding achievements has been building a fulfilling career in education.

Testimonials

WORD ON THE STREET

I would like to take this opportunity to recommend Carol as a fellow-instructional designer and a friend. Carol began work at the University of Texas at Tyler a few months after I was hired there. We shared an office space and I was privileged to witness continually first-hand, her strong work ethic, winning personality, and poise under pressure. She quickly became an integral member of our team as she freely shared her enthusiasm and incredible insights into working with faculty to create engaging learning experiences for their students. I marvel at how quickly and effectively she grasps new procedures and tools and fosters professional relationships with faculty and other colleagues. I believe Carol's expertise and can-do attitude will be an asset to any organization fortunate enough to employ her.

Curriculum Development

Curriculum development and application are ongoing. In the educational system, five central philosophies influence the curriculum and the program; Essentialism, Perennialism, Progressivism, Reconstructionism, and Existentialism. The philosophy established by the institution is related to the organization's beliefs and culture, which influences how educators teach and the methods used. The goal of identifying the learning theory establishes how students absorb, process, make connections to previous experiences, and retain new knowledge.

Curriculum alignment is the design to improve student achievement through standards, instruction, and assessment. Aligning curriculum objectives/outcomes is complex, with many layers linked with codes horizontally and laterally. Alignment codes collected through assessments identify student growth and gaps in learning and instruction.

Instructional Design Process

Design practice, creating instructional experiences where knowledge is conveyed efficiently and engaging. An Instructional Designer designs instructional material using abstract (theory and process) and physical tools. Course development using Universal Design considers a wide range of students' learning and experience.

  • Consultant providing instructional theory and best practice support

  • Collaborate with the Subject Matter Experts (SME)

  • Identify the audience, articulate learning outcomes/objectives, and develop content

  • Create an action plan and goals with learning experiences that engage, inspire and connect with the audience, addressing Quality Matter standards for online and blended courses

  • Examine teaching strategy, e.g., content, graphics, rich media, and audio/video

  • Align learning outcomes/objectives

  • Address ADA compliance

  • Evaluate new technologies to enhance instruction

  • Faculty training

Design examines Learning Theories' conceptual framework of Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Connectivism, identifying how knowledge is absorbed and retained. Guide instructional cycles using ADDIE, Merrill, Gagne's, and Kemp's design module theories.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes and Alignment with Backward Design

This strategy for design develops courses by identifying the desired learning outcomes first, then developing strategies for assessment, instructions, and assignments. Creating instructional content and activities that target achievement results.
